DistroFi vs YNAB

Both help you give every dollar a plan. YNAB is a powerful budgeting system built around the month, with optional bank import. DistroFi is a simpler, manual budget built around your paycheck. Here's an honest look at which one fits you.

Shorter version: budget by paycheck or by month.

The big difference: paychecks vs months

YNAB's method asks you to budget only the money you have right now, and it lays that out by calendar month. It works well, and plenty of people who live paycheck to paycheck use it successfully. You do the paycheck math yourself, inside a monthly view.

DistroFi starts from the paycheck. Each pay period has its own start and end date, the bills due inside it, what goes to savings and debt, and your spending budgets. One number, Remaining, shows what's actually left until your next payday.

Example. You're paid every other Friday. Rent is due on the 1st and your car payment on the 20th.

In DistroFi, your Sep 25 to Oct 8 paycheck shows rent due Oct 1 and leaves the car payment for the next check. When a month has three paydays, that third check simply shows up as another period with fewer bills in it, instead of something you have to work around.

Where YNAB is stronger

Where DistroFi is different

Switching from YNAB

DistroFi can't import your YNAB data, so you start fresh with your next paycheck. That usually takes a few minutes:

You can keep YNAB running alongside it until you're sure. YNAB lets you export your data if you want to keep a copy.

Why I built DistroFi

I get paid every other Friday, and monthly budgets never matched my paychecks. Some bills landed on one check, some on the next, and I was always doing the math in my head to figure out what was actually safe to spend. So I built the budget I wanted: one plan per paycheck, no bank login, and one number that tells me what's left until payday.

Questions

Can I import my budget from YNAB?

No. DistroFi doesn't import from YNAB or from banks. Setting up your next paycheck by hand usually takes a few minutes.

Does DistroFi use zero-based budgeting like YNAB?

It's a similar idea. Your paycheck is split into bills, savings, debt and spending budgets, and Remaining shows what hasn't been planned or spent yet. The difference is that each plan covers one paycheck instead of one month.

Is DistroFi really free?

Yes. The core budget is free forever with no caps. Pro ($2.99 a month) adds rollover, the AI advisor, spending trends, investment goals and a full backup; Couples ($4.99 a month) adds partner sync.

Does DistroFi work on my phone and computer?

Yes. It installs from your browser on iPhone, Android and computers, with no app store needed. Sign in with a free account on each device to keep them in sync.
