DistroFi vs YNAB: budget by paycheck or by month?

October 4, 2026

If you get paid every other Friday, a monthly budget makes you do the paycheck math yourself. YNAB is built for that monthly view. DistroFi starts a new plan on payday.

YNAB is a strong system. You assign the money you have right now, month by month. It can import from some banks, one subscription covers up to 6 people, and it has reports, a loan planner, workshops, and native phone apps. It is $14.99 a month or $109 a year. There is no free plan. A direct signup includes a 34-day trial with no card. College students can get a year free.

DistroFi is smaller on purpose. Each pay period has a start, an end, the bills due inside it, and one number, Remaining, for what is left until the next payday. Weekly and every-two-weeks periods start on your real payday. Twice-a-month periods run the 1st to the 15th and the 16th to month end. You enter everything yourself. There is no bank link. The core app is free with no caps. Pro is $2.99 a month and Couples is $4.99. Pro starts with a 7-day trial and a card is required. Cancel before it ends and you are not charged.

YNAB is the better fit if you want bank import, a deep monthly system, or one plan shared with up to 6 people. DistroFi is the better fit if you think in paychecks, do not want to connect a bank, and want to try a budget with no account.

Switching does not import your YNAB history. You start with the next paycheck: take-home pay, bills and the day each is due, spending amounts, then any savings or debts. You can keep YNAB running until you are sure.
